Okay I’ll stop, lest I get carried away and begin to sound like a late-night infomercial.
Or is it too late for that? Anyway, listen up ..
Are you a small business owner looking to establish an online presence OR a blogger looking to get started OR you just want a hobby-website OR “insert your reason for wanting a website here” ? The bottom line is, if it’s a Website/Blog, you want – you are at the RIGHT place. At the RIGHT time.
A Short Hello!
My name is Reeta – a designer/coder/logo-maker all rolled into one. I’d like to welcome you to UtterlyWeb – your one-stop shop for honest websites (blogs too) that kick-ass!
After that stunningly modest introduction, I’d like to add just one last “qualification”- I absolutely love making websites. It’s what gets me off the bed in the morning, excited about the day ahead. Why at times I even dream about coding and such. What can I say, I am a geek and I love being one. I have been designing websites since 2010, but UtterlyWeb is a fairly new venture.
By degree, I am an Economist (from Texas A&M, so a special discount for all Aggies) but decided to switch careers for all the aforementioned reasons. I divide my time between New York & New Delhi. My dream is to be able to travel all over the world. Someday I shall. But for now, I’m just really stoked about “traversing” the world wide web, making websites for clients near and far!
But enough about me already. Let’s talk about YOU!
Secrets to A Killer Website REVEALED
Let me start by asking you a question. Which of the following categories, best describes you?
#1 You already have a website, maybe even for years. But it’s done squat for your business.
#2 You think you just might need a website (since everyone else seems to have one). But you don’t quite get what the buzz is about.
#3 You really understand how a website can open up a whole new world of opportunities, but it just costs too much.(You’ll be shaking your head in pleasant disbelief in a moment. That’s my guarantee.)
#4 You and your business are doing just fine. You just like secrets!
The fact is, if you don’t have a website, or more specifically, if you don’t have a website that’s getting in the big bucks, you are missing out on a HUGE opportunity. An opportunity to exploit and unleash the immense power of the internet to take your business to amazing…soaring… new heights.
Did you know, there are studies that show that a consumer looking for a product/service will turn to the internet 80% of the time? Whether you’re a realtor or a plumber or a photographer or a life coach, know that more and more people are turning to the internet looking for YOU – your services, your products!
But let me make one thing clear – not only do you need a website, you need one that lays a solid foundation for Search Engine Optimization(SEO). In other words, your website needs to be optimized for search engines, so that when a potential customer turns to Google, it’s your site that shows up.
You can put your website on your business card and tell people about it. Sure, that’s important too. But the real potential of websites lies in being found organically through a search engine such as Google.
What if I were to tell you that you can have a fully customized, unique, downright gorgeous website that Google will love AND that’s awesomely affordable….would you believe me? You’d better!
But first I’d like to address a few concerns you might have AND a few concerns you didn’t even know you had! So read on..
What Is The Difference Between A Blog And A Website?
To Put it very simply – a blog is a type of a website. Ergo, all blogs are websites. A website, on the other hand, may or may not have a blog as a part of it. UtterlyWeb is an example of a site that has a ‘Blog’ page set up as well (look up at the navigation menu).
Do I Need A Blog/A Website Or A Website+Blog?
Search engines love fresh, relevant and regular content. A great way to accomplish that is through a blog. So I’d highly recommend a blog to go with your site. Whether you want the blog set up as your homepage or have it elsewhere on the website, is really up to you.
For instance, if you’re a photographer, you’d probably want to showcase your talent on the homepage. In which case, you could have the blog set up as one of the inner pages.
But what could you, a photographer, possibly blog about? Plenty, as it turns out. You could write about your passion for photography, experiences as a photographer, photography tips and tricks etc. That was just an example. No matter what your profession is, you’ll have a lot to talk about.
Guess what else? You could place ads on your blog to earn an extra buck!
In short, a blog = more income + a lotta Google lovin’
Professionally Designed vs Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Websites
Let’s face it – in today’s digital world, anyone can pick up a book and have a website going. But as with other skills, there’s a learning curve which means investment in terms of time, effort and money. Moreover, there’s a huge difference between a ‘done-it-myself’ website and a professionally designed one; it doesn’t take a discerning eye to spot an amateur website.
Remember, your big objective is to establish an online presence to attract visitors. Let’s say your potential customers are able to find you through search engines. But, if your website looks outdated or unprofessional, what are the odds that they will like to spend time going through the site, let alone take it seriously? A quality website with quality content is of utmost importance!
Are Pre-Made Website Templates/Themes The Answer?
Hang on, I’ll get to this one in a bit.
This is When You Don’t Need a Designer..
While you do want a professionally done up website, you don’t want to be stuck with a website that leaves you completely dependent on your designer, for every tiny tweak that you might want to make in the future. In fact, the DIY aspect becomes important once your designer has handed over your website to you.
You should be able to make changes such -adding new blog posts or images, making edits to existing content, deleting pages altogether, adding applications etc. ALL BY YOURSELF! The tools I use to build websites plus my cheat-sheet guide will help you do just that.
WordPress + Thesis = A Killer Website
WordPress is arguably the best platform for housing a website or a blog. It has revolutionized the way websites are built and maintained. WordPress gives your blog/site a rock-solid back-end, it’s easy to use and guess what else? It’s FREE. That clinches the deal, doesn’t it?
Now would be a good time to talk about WordPress themes. A theme takes care of the design element of a site/blog. WordPress, being the popular platform that it is, there’s a plethora of choices to choose from.
Free Themes: These might lure you with their looks, not to mention their price tag (or lack thereof). But free themes come with their own baggage –think malware, security loopholes, lack of updates or customer support etc. Consider the following scenario – WordPress releases an update, but your free theme fails to keep up. The result? Your once beautiful site goes completely out of whack. While I am a big proponent(and user) of open source software and freebies in general, remember- when it comes to your website’s foundation, you should make no compromises.
Premium Themes: These are paid, ready-to-use, pre-made, customizable templates that not only look professional but aren’t plagued by any of the above-mentioned problems. . While there are innumerable WordPress premium themes, not all were created equally. So which one to choose? At this point, I’ll cut to the chase and introduce to you, the most successful of them all, used by over 50,000 customers – Thesis. Check it out –
A Thesis website has all the makings of a chart-topper!
With Thesis, you literally start with a clean slate and there’s absolutely no limit to where you take your website’s design. Pretty it up pretty much as you please! The end result is a fully customized, absolutely unique website like no other on the world wide web (can’t say that about most other themes).
But Pretty Doesn’t Cut It Anymore..Remember?
You don’t just want a pretty site. Google loves websites that are fast, efficient and run on clean code. Thesis is hands down the most flexible, reliable and robust theme around. You can rest, assured that your Thesis blog/site will be lightening fast, search engine optimized and gorgeous to boot!
This means more & more potential customers will be able to find you through Google. And that means more $$ for you!
Here are just a few internet biggies who rock the Thesis framework –
All of the above rely heavily on their websites to earn a living, so they know what they’re doing. Needless to say they will settle for nothing but the absolute best.
Have Complete Control Over Your Site or Blog
